With over a dozen letter winners returning, Middletown South will the hit the mats with a wealth of experience heading into the 2011-2012 season.
The most notable of South's returners is defending Region 6 champion Nick Herring at 152 pounds. He will anchor the middle of the lineup, while South has five double-digit winners returning in the lower half of the lineup, including previous Region qualifiers Garrett Rumsby, Andrew Blasco, and Tim Cody.
With only a couple seniors, the Eagles will be a bit young in the upper half of the lineup. Senior Sam Fowler won 14 matches last season and will most likely see time at 220 and heavyweight, while junior Mo Jrad, a TCNJ Pride Tournament medal winner last season, checks in at 182. There are pretty good numbers in these weight classes for South though, so Coach Kumfert should have a lot of options to make moves in the duals.
On paper, Howell remains the team to beat in A-North and CBA is expected to be their top challenger, but South has some pieces here to keep themselves in the mix and should once again have a strong showing at the Districts.
Wrestler To Watch - (Sr) Nick Herring
Herring enters the season with 92 career wins, just 21 short of the school record held by some guy named Glenn Pritzlaff. The defending District 22 and Region 6 champion has made two trips to Atlantic City in his career, but has come up short in his quest for a State medal on both occasions. Look for the drought to end in 2012 as Herring should make a lot of noise down at Boardwalk Hall, and will be a strong favorite to capture his 3rd District title and 2nd Region title.
