The Eagles come off a solid 2017 campaign that saw them go 19-11, snapping a two-season losing streak. A good portion of last year's lineup is back, and there are some talented newcomers looking to make an immediate impact, as South looks to continue moving forward in 2018.

Michael Holland and James Piehler return after solid rookie seasons in which Piehler recorded 29 wins, while Holland won 28 bouts and advanced to the Regions after placing 3rd in the District. Junior AJ Vega, also returns for South, giving the team some good experience down low as they some new faces also join the lineup.

Senior Danny Ward anchors the middle, and has put the work in to have a strong final season. Returning starters Anthony Dacunto and Nico Albanese will also look to get to the next level this season, and give the Eagles good experience in the middle, as a few more new faces look to break in the lineup.

A strong group of seniors returns in the upper part of the lineup in Justin Weimer, Jack Hardzewicz, and Adam Markmann, who are entering their 4th year as starters for South. Weimer, a 24-bout winner last season, projects to see time at 160 and 170. Hardzewicz, a District runner-up last season, could also see time wrestling up if needed depending on matchups. Markmann was also a District runner-up last season, and has the ability to be one of the top heavies in the Shore. All three put a lot of work in the off-season, with an eye on making strong post-season runs. Also returning at 220, is junior Brady Smith, who is coming off a 17-win sophomore season. This group has the potential to be one of the Shore's better group of upperweights.

The Eagles have a lot of proven talent returning and have the potential to top their win total of 19 from a season ago, as the program continues to rise. They've got a very tough date right out of the gate with a trip to Long Branch on December 20th,  that should provide some pretty interesting individual matchups and give a good read on the Eagles early on. The team took some lopsided losses to the B-North heavies a year ago, but look for them to close that gap this year. If the newcomers come along nicely, South could be a tough out and perhaps pull off a surprise or two. As for the post-season, South put three wrestlers into the Regions last year, a number they should be able to top this year. They'll also be looking to advance their first wrestler to Atlantic City since 2013.
